Stating that “compassion begins at home” sounds like we should express compassion at home before showing compassion to others. The response to this is “yes, and …” Being compassionate with oneself and family is always a good practice and the actual learning to be compassionate starts at home in our infancy. Children model the behaviors that are exhibited around them. They learn compassion, kindness and respect by observation and personal experience. What are your earliest memories of the people in your life being kind and respectful? When did you first sense compassion? If you don’t recall such experiences, remember, it’s never to late to create new memories!
